The following is a question I asked through Instagram DM concerning my ability to receive PRK, and what costs the Air Force might cover:
“Evening sir, I wanted to ask a few questions regarding cross training into PJ. I unfortunately was informed today by an optometrist my astigmatism is severe enough to prevent me from receiving PRK at the moment, and highly recommended waiting until I’m 21 (for reference I am 17). My ultimate goal as stated before is PJ, and I was curious to know what the process for/how easy cross training into Pararescue is. Right now I’m a little knocked down and hard for a path, but I still plan to enlist out of high school into a fellow battlefield airman position (EOD, SOWT, etc. Positions which allow correction to 20/20 with glasses) until I can qualify my vision for PJ. Also, do you have any information regarding the Air Force potentially compensating for PRK surgery? Not reliant on that, just curious if it’s within the Air Force’s ability to cover it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I will have the response from SocomAthlete posted below if I am able.
